Kourtaliotis - The Gorge of Echos
A guided experience in Kourtaliotiko Gorge, one of Crete's most important Natura 2000 ecosystems, combining hiking and swimming stops!
Not every landscape reveals its secrets at first glance — some must be crossed to be understood. The sound of wind moving through the cliffs. The sound of water flowing endlessly between the rocks. The vertical walls rise hundreds of metres above the river. The aromas of wild herbs growing from cracks in the stone. The coolness of the springs that give life to one of Southern Crete's most important natural environments.
This is a guided exploration of Kourtaliotiko Gorge, designed for those who wish to experience it beyond a simple visit.
We follow the course of the river, beginning at the impressive waterfalls, where water plunges between towering cliffs, creating one of the most spectacular sights in the region. Moving in and out of the water, we gradually discover the gorge as it unfolds around us. Along the way, we stop to swim, rest, and observe the unique flora and fauna of the area, while a small local tasting offers another way to connect with the landscape through its flavours. If conditions allow, we may even be fortunate enough to spot the Griffon Vulture soaring above the cliffs - one of the most iconic species of Cretan wildlife.
This is more than a visit to Kourtaliotiko Gorge - it is an opportunity to experience it with all your senses: the sound of water, the touch of stone, the aromas of wild herbs, the taste of the land, and the ever-changing beauty of a landscape that reveals itself step by step.
