Preveli Palm Forest - The River and the Sea
A Hiking Journey Where the River Meets the Libyan Sea - A linear route from Preveli Bridge to Preveli Beach and Palm Forest, returning via the trail towards Drymiskiano Ammoudi.
Not every landscape reveals itself at first glance — some unfold slowly, one step at a time. In the sound of the river flowing endlessly towards the sea. In the shade of plane trees, carob trees, and ancient olive groves. In the aromas of wild herbs growing on the southern slopes. In the imposing cliffs that embrace the valley. In the first glimpse of the palm forest and the Libyan Sea opening before us from above. And in that rare place where fresh water meets salt water.
This is a small-group journey through one of Crete's most remarkable natural landscapes. Beginning at the old bridge of Preveli, we follow a trail running alongside the river, passing through olive groves, carob trees, aromatic herbs, and wild Mediterranean vegetation. In the first section of the route, the Old Monastery of Preveli can be seen in the distance, while the trail gradually leads us through impressive rock formations and views across the river valley.
As we continue, the Palm Forest of Preveli and the river's mouth gradually reveal themselves below — one of the most iconic landscapes of Southern Crete. A stone-built path leads us down to Preveli Beach, where the cool waters of the river meet the sea. Here there is time for swimming, relaxation, and exploration of the protected palm forest. Along the way, a carefully curated artistic audio experience invites us to engage with the landscape through a different perspective.
The return follows a different route. From the eastern side of the area, a trail with panoramic views of the Libyan Sea leads towards Drymiskiano Ammoudi, offering a final glimpse of this extraordinary place where mountain, river, and sea come together.
